By default, Skype is configured to host your text-based chats in the cloud for a limited time (30 days). It will then be deleted. So what would you do if you needed to find something important in it? Microsoft has a solution for this. You can back up Skype chat history and files. Here’s how to do it on a Windows 10 PC.
Backup Skype files and chat history to your PC
If you want to keep a longer archive of your chat history, do the following.
1/ Visit the Skype Export files & Chat History page to send the request
Go to skype.com and sign in with your Microsoft account.
When you sign in, choose what you want to download:
When done, press the ‘Send request’ button visible there.
Immediately you will see a message Your export is being prepared. Please check soon to download it
2/ Download and read your chat history
When your request is complete, you’ll get a Skype notification with a link to view or download your file.
Go ahead and click the Download button to download your files.
This is a trap! The chat history you choose to download is available as a TAR file, but the conversations are presented as a JSON file. As such, you will need a special tool to make them easy to read. Try the Skype Parser Tool. Visit this skype.com to download.
Once downloaded, unzip it and inside it you will find a file called ‘index.html.
Open it in Chrome, Edge, or any browser you like.
Click the Choose file button in Messages.json to select the file you just downloaded. Click Load.
The interface that opens will allow you to comfortably do what you want with your chat history.
